Lumberton NC Tractor Trailer Crash Results in Two Deaths and Other Serious Injuries
A very serious accident involving a tractor-trailer in Lumberton, North Carolina has resulted in two deaths and serious injuries to two others. The accident happened just after 1:00 pm on Highway 72. According to available information, a tractor-trailer ran off the road to the right and then came back onto the road and over-corrected this traveling in the oncoming lane. The tractor-trailer hit a car driven by Wendell McRae of Lumberton despite Mr. McRae’s attempts to avoid the collision.
The tractor-trailer was apparently hauling flammable substances because the tractor-trailer caught on fire. The fire then spread to Mr. McRae’s car. Mr. McRae and a 29 year old passenger were rescued from the burning car and taken to McLeaod Hospital in Florence, South Carolina. Tragically, a one year old child in the McRae’s vehicle did not survive. The driver of the tractor-trailer also did not survive.
There is an on-going investigation as to why the tractor-trailer driver initially veered off the roadway.
